Dr. Igor’s Veggie Burgers with Hemp Hearts Recipe

Burgers are a good idea all year round. Summer barbeques are fun, but this one veggie burger you will want to keep on deck for every season. Packed with plant protein, beautiful savory flavors and topped with fresh condiments on a toasted whole wheat bun. Read on for your new favorite burger – meat and veggie lovers alike!

This simple yet delicious homemade veggie burger combines hemp hearts, walnuts, black beans, rice, bread crumbs, jalapenos and more to create a juicy patty packed with flavor, healthy fats and protein.  Hemp hearts a great source of heart-healthy amino acids and fats, which can aid in the fight against heart disease and high cholesterol. They also add a great texture, along with the walnuts, to this veggie burger patty. With all the ingredients combined in the food processor, this is just about the simplest recipe for a veggie burger out there! 

If you prefer to grill your burgers, line the grill with a thin layer of foil sprayed with a light layer of cooking spray. Grilling might add even a little extra flavor to this already delicious burger!

Preparation

  1. Cook rice as instructed by the packaging, or use a microwavable minute rice.
  2. In a small pan, cook the onions, garlic and jalapenos for 3 minutes on medium or until translucent. Add the walnuts and hemp hearts into the pan and saute for another 3 minutes.
  3. In a processor, add the black beans, bread crumbs, bbq sauce or ketchup, and all the spices and seasonings. Pulse for 3-4 times to combine but not turn the mixture into mush, scrape down the sides and repeat until everything is well combined.
  4. Working with your hands, form 6 big burger patties and lay them on a tray lined with parchment paper. Heat a non-stick pan or skillet to medium and sear each patty for 4-5 minutes on each side or until toasty and golden brown. Repeat for the rest of the patties.
  5. Assemble the burgers and then enjoy!
